Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Day is one of my favorite holidays. It seems to be the only holiday that has kept its serenity. The commercialization of it has not exceeded itself. It is a day dedicated to the giving of thanks which is what the Word of God tells us to do often. The love of life and family still exists on this festive day. Although, I hear tale of many families opting out from such silly, frivolous affairs as 'thanksgiving'. With the thought of Christmas being right around the corner they might say, 'It's too much trouble' and by-pass Thanksgiving all together. It is more than gathering together around a bountiful meal or salivating over that deliciously aromatic pumpkin pie (with loads of whipped topping). Thankfulness is one of life's greatest attributes and pleasures. So is the act of giving. These two words - thanks & giving - coupled together in a daily mode of life equal joy. Have you ever noticed that the happiest people you are likely to meet are the ones who give of themselves 100%? These are the same who are ever so grateful for the smallest contributions. They seem to radiate with an endless supply of the energy called joy.

Giving + Thanks = Joy!

"(As it is written, 'He has dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth forever. Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;) Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness which causeth through us thanksgiving to God. For the administration of this service not only supplieth the want of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God;"
- II Corinthians 9:9 - 12

If we take one or the other out then it is incomplete. When we cannot give thanks even in the hardest of times then our joy is none existent. We'll find that when in need of joy if we just start thanking the Lord for the littlest of things (often the things we take for granted) then the light of joy begins to dispel our gloom of despair.

So before we rush off at the sound of the Thanksgiving Sale 'gun', let's stop and give God thanks, show our gratitude to those we love and to those around us. Stop to be thankful. Both for the great and the small to the great and small. It makes for a great start-off of the Holiday Season!

A Plea

God grant me these: the strength to do
Some needed service here;
The wisdom to be brave and true;
The gift of clear vision,
That in each task that comes to me
Some purpose I may plainly see.

God teach me to believe that I
Am stationed at a post,
Although the humblest 'neath the sky,
What I am needed most,
And that, at last, if I do well,
My humble services will tell.

God grant me faith to stand on guard,
Uncheered, unspoke, alone,
And see behind such duty hard
My service to the throne.
Whate'er my task, be this my creed:
I am on earth to fill a need.
